According to UN statistics, every year, millions of women and girls are forced into prostitution and bonded labour. The exploitation and abuse of women and girls has always existed and prostitution is a global market.
Governments have realised that they cannot combat such a complex challenge alone. From the local to the global, every level must work together. The Andrea Network consists of a range of feminist workers, activists, academics and researchers who have developed a wide analysis of sexual violence and its relation to the movement of women across national borders.
The UN Convention on Transnational Organised Crime has three attached Protocols, one of which specifically relates to trafficking of women and children. The Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons aims to facilitate international co-operation against trafficking. The UK government has signed the Convention and its three associated protocols. There is growing awareness of the phenomenon of trafficking and there is a significant role for non-governmental organisations and individuals to work together to address this issue. Basic requirements include:
Take all steps necessary to protect trafficked persons and their close relatives from intimidation, threats and reprisals, especially those trafficked persons who act as witnesses.
Ensure trafficked persons are not detained, prosecuted or punished for crimes related to them being trafficked.
Prevent immediate deportation of trafficked persons and ensure all trafficked persons are given a temporary right to stay.
Ensure the temporary right to stay includes a rest period during which time trafficked persons can recover from their ordeal whilst being provided with shelter, counselling, health and legal services and other forms of support.
